Andrew Carwood - Tenor

Andrew currently enjoys a unique career in British music, working as both an international soloist and director of his own award-winning vocal consort, The Cardinall’s Musick. A choral scholar at St John's College, Cambridge and lay clerk at Christ Church, Oxford and Westminster Cathedral, he became Director of Music at the Brompton Oratory in 1995 but is now entirely freelance.

One of the most versatile singers of his generation, Andrew has a repertoire that encompasses music from the renaissance to the contemporary: from the consort songs of William Byrd to the role of the Male Chorus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia.

As a soloist he has worked worldwide with conductors such as Roger Norrington, Harry Christophers, Richard Hickox, Paul McCreesh, Philippe Herreweghe, Robert King, Christopher Hogwood, Joshua Rifkin and Andrew Manze and he is a regular member of The Tallis Scholars.

Recent solo engagements have included performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion (arias) for Roger Norrington, Bach’s St John Passion (Evangelist) and Dvorak’s Stabat Mater for Richard Hickox, Bach’s Easter Oratorio for Joshua Rifkin, Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings and St Nicolas, and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony. Andrew’s solo discography includes works by Hassler, Vivaldi, Purcell, Bach, Haydn, Warlock, Howells, Poulenc, Janacek and Christopher Headington. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of The BBC Singers and Director of the Schola Cantorum at the annual Edington Music Festival.
